Occupational therapy is a health care profession concerned with restoring useful physical functionality following disabling accidents and sickness. The goal of occupational therapy is to assist the patient in achieving the maximum level of independent function.
Patients include persons suffering from strokes, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, arthritis, head injuries, amputations, burns, hand injuries, as well as people with visual, auditory and speech problems.
The primary tool of the occupational therapist is the active involvement of the patient in therapeutic tasks and activities which, while improving function, help the patient learn to apply the newly restored or impaired function in meeting the demands of daily living.
Our team of highly specialized physical therapists excels in the treatment of disorders of muscles, bones or joints by means of physical agents — heat, light, water, manual and electronic massage and exercise. Stroke, arthritis, fractures and nerve damage are common conditions treated.
The type of treatment needed is prescribed by a physician and carried out by trained physiotherapists. The therapist attempts to prevent pain or further damage and may also train different muscles to compensate for ones that have been damaged.
One of the greatest benefits we provide to our patients is the ability to have complete diagnostic services fulfilled conveniently in our office. Southern Orthopedic Specialists, P.A. operates its own, on-site x-ray facility, staffed by four full-time Registered Radiology Technicians. This provides our patients with the benefit of scheduling a single appointment for evaluation of skeletal disorders.
The level of radiation received by a patient during an orthopedic diagnostic x-ray procedure is minimal and safe. Our clinic has made additional efforts to keep our patients' exposure to an absolute minimum, with the installation of radiation-reducing filters, and by using x-ray film that allows for minimal exposure levels. Nevertheless, if a patient is or suspects she may be pregnant, she should notify the x-ray technician before beginning the x-ray procedure.
